Your pancreas makes a hormone called insulin. It’s what lets your cells turn glucose from the food you eat into energy. People with type 2 diabetes make insulin, but their cells don’t use it as well as they should. Doctors call this insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance increases your risk for progressing to diabetes. You could be insulin resistant for years without knowing it. This condition typically doesn’t trigger any noticeable symptoms.

When you are insulin resistant, the insulin just kind of bounces off the cell. What happens is the cell has gotten so used to seeing insulin all the time from blood glucose coming in so much that it ends up just shutting the door to it. It’s like leaving a fan on for a long time. It just becomes white noise after a while.
